Fire services all over the World have been quick to adopt drones, and they certainly help commanders see much more clearly where fires are most intense, as well as the direction of fire travel in structures. It is also very interesting to see how many fire videos are now being made using drones, which give a much better overall idea of both fire behavior and firefighting tactics. They do tend to illustrate very well just how often water jets directed from street level are actually achieving almost nothing, because the firefighters directing the branch simply cannot see where the stream is going in relation to what is actually burning.
I read once that fire services reckon that at large fires only around 10% of the water used actually results in fire suppression, and some of these drone videos do tend to confirm this.
Hopefully the increasing use of drones with infrared cameras will make it increasingly easier to “get the wet stuff on the red stuff”.
