I was always impressed by the BSPP dress uniform, especially the gleaming metal helmets, which were actually their firefighting gear too for many years - until the Gallett “ spacemen’s” helmets were fairly recently eventually adopted. I also found it interesting that in WWI the French army adopted the same metal fire service helmet for their infantry, because at the start of the war they had not thought about equipping them with shrapnel proof headgear. These were of course matte painted rather than the highly polished fire helmets - which would have made the wearers a bit too conspicuous to enemy snipers!
