Humberside Foam Tender KRH582V

Ex Humberside Foam Tender that I am restoring at the moment. Can anyone tell me if it was involved in an accident when it was in service . I was given some photo's of it at a body shop with the rear offside locker and side panels missing.

Yes it was being driven across the junction of Dansom Lane and Witham when a bus ran into the back end. It was on blue lights at the time and the driver was the late Graham Steel

Thanks for the information Glenn . I have spoken to a few firemen who either drove it or could remember it but there has never been any mention of an accident.

Only ever saw this operational once at Barnetby train station after a rail tanker overturned. A large foam blanket was in place while trains were allowed through a couple of days after the incident. I think the date was around 1985/1986. I believe both of the Humberside foam tenders attended this incident. Does anyone have any details of this incident?

The Barnetby train crash you are on about happened at Wrawby Junction on 09 December 1983. An oil train from Drax power station to Lindsey oil refinery hit a local passenger train killing a 19 year old woman. The crash was caused by a signalman failing to properly secure a set of faulty points.

Hi George, this was not the incident I am referring to although I remember this as my sister was traveling home from London that night and was severely delayed. The incident I am referring to involved an oil train traveling from Immingham. As it approached Barnetby I believe an axle broke and derailed some of the carriages. This was a large incident involving both foam tenders laying a large blanket of foam. Definately 85/86 as I was in my first year of university at Nottingham.

Mike,
I was going to query the incident and date as I, and just about every other Humberside firefighter of the time attended this incident during its operation...I did'nt recall it being anything other than a derailment and consequent petrol spillage (in vast quantities) and certainly not a fatality !...I googled it and found the one George is referring to but not this one ...possibly because it was not actually a crash ..whilst the one George refers to was ?

As I said huge quantities of petrol had to be recovered from around the railway station /village area via specially dug 'sumps' at strategic points..nonetheless a large quantity of petrol was never recovered and, as a result for a considerable time afterwards the standard PDA for any fire related incident in Barnetby was I believe 3 pumps and a foam tender ?

I also mentioned most firefighters from Humberside attended this incident at some time..as we had a badge making machine for charity events there was even talk of a badge being produced saying 'I did'nt go to Barnetby'

Thank you for the information. Do you know what this incident went to in terms of pumps and specials? When I went through on the train I counted four pumps, this foam tender and the old Ford Cargo Hose layer. As I have already said, this was a couple of days after the incident and when I went back to Nottingham it was pitch black so could not see anything clearly.

I think your explanation about why details are scarce is very accurate. I had not thought of this simply being classed as a derailment.

Thank you once again for the information Rick

Mike,
No I hav'nt got any ideas what the incident went to..in terms of specials or pumps.. my recollections are more anecdotal..firemen being firemen usually find a comfy place on large incidents for rest periods etc...in this case it was an upstairs room at Barnetby railway station and amazingly, ... considering the incident.... a roaring open coal fire.....lovely !!! I also remember the 'fireground feeding' was not very good at first and it was'nt until a fireman 'collared' the CFO in the said 'mess room' and complained about it that we got better food !

It was stationed at Bransholme Fire Station for some considerable time, mainly domestic incidents at that station. This Foam Tender was the only Humberside appliance never to respond to an incident in its own stn ground

Thanks very much Rick for the information. I have found it very informative

I attended both of the above incidents. I am not certain if Immingham's Foam Tender DFU 733G was in service or it's replacement. The fatal was a derailment. The other job, a "massive" petrol job lasted about 3 weeks I think (huge underground petrol concentrations). Maybe longer if you include the 2 hour gas tests which required a pump to be sent on standby! I was on 1st attendance and eventually was sent to feed the initial crews. I had recommended the local fish & chip shop and to all of our amazement (running the idea to the Chief), it was approved! Can you imagine the faces of the couple who ran the chippie when I entered the shop in full fire fighting gear (without removing helmet for maximum effect) and asked for "Fish & Chips 30 times please? (I think it was 6 x pumps initially plus officers)anyhow, the brigade paid!

The incident occurred on 16 January, 1986. Max number of pumps at any time was 9. Specials were 3 ETs from Immingham, Scunthorpe and North Hull and 2 Foam tenders from Immingham and Bransholme. The latter being KRH582V
