HUH 314D Emergency Tender Cardiff Fire
Dennis Emergency Tender (for road accident rescue etc)of Cardiff City Fire Service. Based at Westgate Street, Central then to new Central at Adam Street, Adamsdown, Cardiff, Wales, UK. Fleet No 10 registered 1966. Fitted with front mounted hydraulic Boughton winch. Rather a beast as the manual gear change was opposite to normal. Right front for 1st(low)gear, back for 2nd, across the gate to the left and forward for 3rd and back for 4th! Quite fast!

This is a twin to the quite famous ET supplied around the same time to Newcastle and Gateshead Joint Fire Brigade in their unique dark red livery, which is also on this site. Very elegant!
Darlington had a "C" registration PWT on this chassis, but with a shorter wheelbase. It had the AEC AV470 130 HP diesel engine, with a 5 speed manual transmission. Not only was this "backwards", but 5th was opposite reverse! Fortunately, 5th did not get a lot of use, except on country runs, but the risk of dropping down into reverse instead of 4th while moving at a fast clip was still a continuing concern. There was even a large notice on the dashboard warning the driver about the unusual "gate". (When it came into service, its Dennis F12 and Commer Carmichael stable mates had more conventionally-designed 4 speed boxes).
