Merryweather Pump Cardiff 1966
Cardiff City Fire Service's only Pump. Others were all Pump-Escapes or Water Tenders. Pictured outside Cardiff's Central Fire Station (demolished 1973) in Westgate Street, Cardiff, Wales, UK in 1966. Nice looking piece but slow. Carried 100galls water. I drove this from March 1972 and it was on the run for a year or two more. In the two right hand bays can just be seen the monitors of two TL's. Long pole drop from the first floor too! The brigade could muster just five pumping appliances plus a couple of Land-Rover Pumps.

Think I made a boo-boo! The Pump is an AEC. Cardiff had mostly that make pumping appliances in the first few years I was there, then they started with ERF Water Tender Ladders.

Hi Tony, Everyone knew what you meant, always safer to refer to them as a Merryweather because it could be an AEC or a Maudsley and before that an Albion.
Always a good line up at Cardiff with the Pump, 2 PEs, 2 TLs, ET and Fot. Station would be a listed building these days.

Its a Maudslay Merlin II/Merryweather Marquis Series 3. Registered NKG91. The 15th one built.

Two TL's, both Merryweather Mechanical and both pretty old even in 1966. One, believe it or not, only to be used 'in emergency' and both were later replaced by a Merryweather Hydraulic (see picture 33398). This was equally scary as the chassis flexed something awful even well within the safety parameters! Fast to drive but very small road jacks and the brakes weak. I much preferred the old MW Mechanical - rock solid with big chunky jacks but oh, all those levers and clutches! All the appliances LOOKED good as a line-up in Westgate Street but that was for public consumption!

I have been looking at these photos of the old C.C.F.S I started my career in the Service in 1966 and brings back such good memories of gentleman I served under, and many thanks for the trip into the past-Griff

I remember the impressive line up at the old Cardiff main station, which I visited a few times in 1968. The foam tender at that time was an old NFS Heavy Unit, and I understand history repeated itself in later years, when an ex AFS Green Goddess became the brigade's "new" fowm tender.

Glory days when for me I served with gentlemen firemen from 1966 till 1974, where for me the brigade was never the same when it became south glamorgan, I welcome any comments
