Fire Engines Photos

I'm just confirming this was a 1957 Bedford S/Haydon/Morris Magirus 85'Turntable Ladder.Its Jersey registration number was J11950.This was the first ever aerial appliance to be purchased by the States of Jersey Fire Brigade.

This appliance served the States of Jersey from 1957 until 1983 when it came to Middlesex and was preserved by Pete Edwards of SEC Fire Protection, then acquiring its 'non age related' UK registration. It subsequently moved to Northamptonshire where I think it began to suffer and I wonder if it still survives (anyone?). Now to the question of bodywork and Magirus concession - John Morris and Sons of Salford certainly held the concession in the 1950s and probably built the bodywork on the TLs that they supplied. However in 1958 they lost the sole concession to David Haydon Ltd of Birmingham; it is commonly believed that David Haydon sub contracted all their bodywork with much of it going to Brade-Leigh of West Bromwich. This would then suggest that the Jersey TL was supplied by John Morris and not David Haydon with the fire engineering carried out by Prestage. Petros' comment about Haydons working with J Morris is highly unlikely as the former had gained the sole concession for Magirus ladders from the latter!

In early 1999 this appliance was owned by Mr James Butlin, of Irthlingborough Northants, and was parked at Sywell airfield. The airport management told Mr Butlin to remove it; I understand that he moved it to an adjacent field. I also understand that Mr Butlin was trying to sell the appliance, but his asking price may have been excessive as the appliance is believed to have been in poor condition. I did not actually see it.

Anyone able to share any information on the Range Rover Commando pictured in the photograph?

John - the Range Rover Commando 6x4 Carmichael is PTJ 698M that was new to the Lancashire County Fire Brigade in 1973 and almost immediately passed to the Greater Manchester Fire Service in 1974. It was classed as an ERT and served at Eccles.

When it came out of service in 1983 it was purchased by SEC Fire Protection of Enfield, Middlesex owned by Pete Edwards as has been mentioned regarding the Jersey Bedford TL. About 1994 it was sold through Marston Motor Auctions and it has since disappeared without trace unless of course anyone knows differently. Where is it now?

DVLA website states PTJ 698M it was due road tax 01 03 1996 and that it is white. Seems probable that it's just a ghost now.

Now TPO 514M ex West Sussex was due tax in 2002, so is more likely to survive, anyone know anything?

Simon, I submitted a comment at the time, but it was not posted. PTJ 698M was for sale on ebay and sold. It had been stripped of all fire-fighting equipment (although maintained it's body), it had also had the original engine removed and replaced with a Nissan? diesel. Not sure of it's fate.

Would you have any knowledge of the whereabouts of the A.E.C./Merryweater TLP Reg no PRX 62 which was at Stn.1.Reading.
You mention a guy named Edwards, who was from Middlesex who owned it.I remember showing him how to operate it whilst attending a rally at Thorpe Park, Surrey many years ago, any help would be appreciated.Thanks!

Excellent! Glad to hear it is still around. Would you be able to post a photo of it? What condition is it in? I first saw this appliance in 1975, on a family holiday in the other island. (Guernseymen try to avoid saying the 'J' word, as it is considered swearing!)

Well the decking needs replacing.it needs sanding down and a respray. But you no what it wouldn't take to much to get it up and running. And the owner is looking to sell it on

Hi Petros! The screwjacks on the was standard on the Magirusladders in the 50 '! IIRC, the first with hydraulic, came in late 60 '!

Hi folks, I am the new owner of this fire engine. It was recently moved from Mildenhall, Suffolk to Spilsby, Lincolnshire. It's in poor condition after 25 years in a garden, but I'm hoping to restore it. I'd be delighted to hear from anyone with any information / details of its history.
