The Pioneer series was a low-cost alternative offered by ALF as an alternative to pumpers on commercial chassis, a much larger apparatus market mainly dominated by the Ford C series.
The cab, using flat panels, was a bit cheaper than the 900 and 1000 series' custom cab, and lower-power commercial truck engines were offered. But the Pioneer did not do too well, because it was still too pricey to sell in large numbers. Another problem was that some ALF loyalists switched to the cheaper Pioneers, which did not help the company at all!
Easy to spot. Pioneer 1 had round single headlights, Pioneer 2 had twin round headlights and Pioneer 3 had twin round headlights on the grey background and a ledge below the windscreen as above.
