Although Iturri was founded in Spain and still has its headquarters there, it now has branches across fourteen countries, so the actual factory where these were built could have been elsewhere. Another example of just how international the fire truck industry has become…

There is one Iturri factory in Germany

This and quite a few other newer ICU designs seem to confirm a trend towards building these on standard truck chassis instead of the older preference for using buses as the base type of vehicle. (Although LFB actually reversed this trend!) I always thought the idea of using a bus had the advantage of an existing standard body structure and also offered low access, rather than the folding staircases found necessary on the truck chassis units like this example. It would be interesting to know the comparative cost of these two alternative designs.

With modern digital technologies, increasing remote command facilities utilization and multiple drone types in common use it seems a much smaller ICU based on a high roof long wheelbase five ton panel van may be in our future and a prototype along these lines in already being evaluated. I have also noticed that in France the typical ICU is often a smaller vehicle along similar lines.

To be noted Munich changing livery and the letterings are in yellow now. Bumpers remain in white as per German regulations

I must remain skeptical about all the variations in emergency service liveries, not only as between countries but even between adjacent different fire services in the same places! I have tried to research this subject in a number of ways but have so far never come across any persuasive studies anywhere to reveal what colors or combinations are actually best from a safety point of view. It seems to me that by now there should be some conclusive results to demonstrate to fire and other emergency responders what their vehicles should ideally look like, stripes included, what they should sound like and what kind of warning lights should be displayed.

But - although the former German chancellor’s police blue lights have by now finally received universal acclaim in Europe - it is blatantly obvious that any commonality in vehicle liveries is just not happening…
