For many decades it was very common for German pumpers which carried a portable pump to have their fixed pump mounted at the front. This enabled the PP to be stored in a central rear locker, taking up the space which would otherwise be dedicated to accommodation for the PTO driven fixed pump. Pumps with a PP were very common, especially with fire brigades which covered rural and semi rural areas without hydrants, but - unlike the UK - these units did not have any water tanks. Modern German pumpers now have their PP in a side locker, and they are always now designed to incorporate a built in water tank too…
