The presence of these two specialist rescues at a Stuttgart volunteer fire station illustrates how this large city has various specialist roles assigned to separate volunteer fire companies around the city. Each one has standard rescue pumpers, but has also specially trained experts with appropriate equipment like this example. Other rescue roles include rope rescue, water rescue, tunnel rescue, railroad rescue, hazmat response and some specialized firefighting roles, including foam, dry powder and chemical fire response, water relaying and command and communications support.

These specially trained volunteers are not intended to replace a full response by appropriately equipped and trained full time crews, but to augment them with additional personnel and equipment as needed, as well as to provide cover in the city when full time specialists are already at an incident.

Stuttgart is an industrial and economic enclaved city surrounded by high hills with growing habitations. The upcoming new train station will be linked by almost 100km of tunnels under the city. 3 additional VFS are currently being built and the engines order book is full.
