Fordson WOT foam tanker RAF

This 'War Office Type 1' foam tender was supplied new to the R.A.F.in 1942. Hundreds were built during the Second World War by the Ford Motor Company, with three variations of the design. They were designed for a crew of two and featured a Ford V8 side-valve 30-bhp engine, and crash gearbox. see article

This Ford V8 engine series was very well known on both sides of the Atlantic for its power in its day, in both passenger car and commercial vehicle applications. Numerous versions were built in the 30s and beyond, but these trucks most probably had the 3.9 liter version introduced in 1939, which developed 95 BHP. It was pretty much at the top end of power ranges at the time, and compared quite well to the much more expensive Leyland fire appliances' six cylinder, which was rated at 108.
