Command units in some countries used to be based on bus bodies, which offered much easier access than these box bodies on truck chassis, and even included a double decker at Karlsruhe (which is on this site).

I can only guess that the trend to these box bodies is a cost saving exercise. Some European brigades have even gone as far as to have their command module in a container (“pod”) transported on a WLF carrier when needed.
