View from outside of the main fire station in Milan. I was surprised at how few stations there are in a large city; while I see the appeal of large stations with a wide variety of equipment, I can imagine response times can be challenging…especially with other Italian drivers to contend with!

If you take a look on YouTube, you may find a video of a ride along with a VFD pumper, which shows a very impressive example of how they drive to incidents. Apart from one Polish ambulance ride along video, I have never seen any emergency vehicle professionally driven so fast and so creatively! In addition, it seems Italian civilian drivers really do always respect and defer to emergency drivers on “ blues and twos”. So the concept of large fire stations which are quite some distance apart in many Italian towns may not be such a bad idea after all.
Here in the US the pattern is very different, and only a very few city fire stations have two pumpers, while some ladder stations occasionally do not even have a pumper. If individual unit’s crews are big enough, it works well, but a lot of towns run with three man pump crews, so interior attacks mean waiting for a second unit anyway.
VDF have five person crews, so the first unit can get to work independently.
Every country has different challenges and solutions, which does make it all quite interesting!
