These belong to the full time fire station, which has a 24/7 paid firefighter duty watch which is variable in numbers, but averages -and is usually around - 20 staffers. Almost 100 operational paid firefighters all work a 48 hour shift, based on a 24 on/48 off schedule with one extra day off per week. There are also around 540 operational unpaid volunteers, working out of thirteen additional fire stations. As often the case in German cities, these are mainly in suburban areas and each has an assigned primary response zone. Depending on the location and nature of a reported incident, back up units come from adjacent volunteer stations and/or the full time central station.
The fleet includes nineteen pumpers and water tenders, plus numerous special purpose units, which is typical of a medium sized German city like this. In recent times they have responded to an average of around five incidents a day, which is about average for a city of 230,000 - bearing in mind that unlike many German cities they do not operate an EMS ambulance service.
