German fire services have a primary responsibility for dealing with hazmat incidents, and the country has extensive chemical and related industries, so hazmat incidents are not that uncommon. With this in mind, some fire services have decided that the hazmat incident command and control process is sufficiently different from typical fire situations that it makes sense to have a dedicated command unit, equipped with hazmat specific detection and remedial gear as well as appropriate communications media.
