This type of roof mounted sprinkler system is usually found on French brush trucks, but it does make a lot of sense if this unit is intended to operate in the close confines of a tunnel. Some special tunnel fire pumpers have both an extra in cabin air supply for crew members and a separate self contained dedicated air supply to the vehicle engine, so that neither the crew nor the engine die of oxygen starvation. The limited supply of air in some tunnels can lead to asphyxiation and stall out vehicle engines too.
Another type of tunnel pumper has a driving cab at each end, combined with four wheel steering. This enables the unit to maneuver without turning around - a difficult challenge in some narrow tunnels.
