This is an 'F series' appliance ! ..an F2...mechanically identical to the F12 but with more 'traditional ' bodywork...some CFO's were slow to adapt to limousine style appliances.

The last of the open bodied Dennis's. Pilkington's Glass Merseyside had 2 with traditional Braidwood bod. I'm sure one was a late 1962?

Both Darlington and Edinburgh bought the first British fully enclosed appliances in 1931, and Paris' Sapeurs-Pompiers had them in the 1920s.
Even the US fire services, which are probably the most conservative of all, started buying them in 1935, when Mack built the first ones. Some even earlier examples of enclosed "limousine" fire engines have turned up in both Portugal and the Netherlands - I seem to remember the earliest example goes back to the nineteen teens.
Referring to more modern F series, I had in mind the original F7 and its little brother, the F12.
But Dennis was actually also the UK "Limousine" pioneer, as the Darlington machine was on a Dennis chassis.

I was given a ride on this fire engine in 1959 I was 8 years old. An uncle of mine was a fireman who drove this wonderful machine.

Was this another case of Dennis selling off "leftover" inventory of obsolete designs at a steep discount, or just that the brigade expected the weather in their corner of the Emerald Isle to suddenly become a lot less inclement?
