Serving as a training academy apparatus in July,1992 was 1 of the 22 Hahn engines bought between 1980-83.
DCFD was 1 of the last major USA cities to use a 2-piece engine company. The 2-piece engine companies had been discontinued earlier in 1992, releasing all of the Hahns for reserve or academy duty.

Warren, these are great historical pics, thank you. Does the three red stars on the door have any particular significance, thanks, , Incidentally, I note that many USA apparatus have a bell on the front bumper, are these just for appearance or is there some other reason, thanks, ,

Warren - do you happen to know how DC staffed their two piece engine companies?

Added by Rob eo on 23 January 2014.
DCFD staffed their engine companies with 4 on the wagon (1 officer, 3 ffs). The wagon was the primary attack rig and was generally the newer of the pair. The second piece was driver only and functioned as the water supply rig (pumper).During such times as the 1968 riots, the 32 engine companies were split into 2, making 64 total engines available.

bells have mostly been decorative for the last 50 years, replaced by the air horn, but recently a few urban fds such as San Francisco, and Portland, Ore. are using bells as pedestrian warning devices, particularly when leaving a station.

Thanks Warren, I guess I better do a search and see if I can find an apparatus responding 'on the bell, ' so to speak, ,

I had the pleasure of driving the Hahn at E30 from 1986 to 1988

Manhasset Lakeville VFD had a Hahn pumper when I lived there in the 80s. Just like this except red! The rest of the fleet of eleven pumpers, three aerials and a heavy rescue included several Wards and American La Frances, a Boardman, a Pierce, a 125 foot Hendrickson Firefly platform and a unique Freghtliner tiller ladder. Both of the last two units are illustrated on this site.

For Firefly read Firebird. Both rather silly names, but Firefly was a UK builder of export fire appliances in the sixties!
