E29 was using this 1250/500 pumper in July,1992.
DCFD started using the Federal "Crossfire" wig-wag light (center front of the cab between the large strobes) in the mid-1980s and continued utilizing this warning device into the early 2000s

The unusual graphics -- 2 red stripes, 3 stars -- represent the DC flag. Also note that the crew cab is part of the pumper body, not added on to the driving cab. I think these Fords were the only D.C. trucks to use this unusual cab style.

The DC graphics reflect the Washington family crest, which includes the three stars and two bars in red on a white ground.

The added-on "telephone box" crew cab is probably the least attractive crew cab ever imposed on a Ford C series, but - to be fair - the styling of the Ford cab does make an integrated crew cab with styled-in rear doors quite a challenge, and they are very rare. Canopy cabs, however, often looked very well integrated, and at this point in time most departments were quite happy with a canopy crew cab.

The crew boxes were a solution to members protection during riots. This started in the early 1970s.During the 1968 riots, many open-cab rigs were temporarily covered with chicken wire and tarps.

Thanks Warren - an interesting but sad bit of history.
