L4P stands for Light 4 wheel drive vehicle with pump.Also, there's a L4R, this is Light 4 wheel drive vehicle(Rescue), and also a L4V which is a Light 4 wheel drive vehicle.Lets also not forget the L4T, this is a Light 4 wheel drive vehicle with hose reel.

Pete - very concise! Are there any underlying requirements for issues of Pump LPM, tank size, crew numbers, or other parameters? Or is it just up to each fire service to spec these units however they feel is most appropriate?

Rob, all brigades(world-wide)have there own specific requirements for there own needs and appliances are manufactured to suit that need.Why not check-out under'categories'at top of page for the various Light Fire Vehicles and for more information on them.

Many countries do actually set national standards and criteria for fire service vehicle specifications, just as Britain did with the JCDD paramters. In the US it is NFPA, in Germany the DIN, and there are similar norms in other countries including France, Austria, Belgium, the Netherlands and others. In France, only the military fire services in Paris and Marseilles can specify their own vehicles differently.
An interesting example is the HLF20/16, which was developed by the Berlin Fire Service, who then established the DIN specification for approval nationwide. This led to the widespread adoption of this appliance, eventually becoming the standard urban first responder all over Germany.
Without DIN compliance, the fleet of HLF20/16 in Berlin would have been limited to the original prototypes and the concept would have stayed in that city.
