Is this not a dennis F2? I'm not sure what a Dennis 8 is. (It's not an F8)

Its likely they are referring to the 8 cylinder Rolls Royce engine under the bonnet ?

Yes its defiantly an F2.......I would like to know a bit more about it, year of manufacture and chassis no etc

Easy misunderstanding. The F2's have the figure 8 in a metal ring on the side of the bonnet just behind the radiator. The F3 have the figure 6 in the same circle at the same position.

These figures 8 and 6 will indicate either an 8 cylinder Rolls B80 or a 6 cylinder B60 engine

Hi , yes it has an 8 on the side so I misunderstood what it was , it is indeed a F2

Yes Andrew, They exist only about 9 were made.
They were distinguished by old style front mudguards with separate large headlights and were powered by Meadows 6 EXA motors of about 9.5 litre capacity

I have Steve Schuelers book , Feuerwehrfahrzeuge Australien Neuseeland (Fire appliances in Australia and new Zealand , in German of course) anyway has 2 F2's in it this one and another with a full cab single cab only and the usual flares over the back wheels

A few updated details , has a Rolls Royce 5.6ltr B61 straight 8 petrol engine, the pump is a centrifugal device , 2 stage , 4500 litres per minute or 1000gpm and is fitted with a horizontal single cylinder double acting priming system.

It can serve 4 lines of hose with each fitted with 25mm (1 inch) nozzles, latter in life it became a foam tender and the pump was fitted with a proportioner that delivered foaming compound from the pump deliveries to special foam brass nozzles.

Matt, we've discussed above the issue of 6 or 8 cylinders, this being an 8, so the engine would be a B80 or B81.

Well I'm no expert but thought that the number denotes the cylinders, also that at 5.6 litres it would exceed the capacity of the B60/61. I'm sure there are some Rolls Royce engine experts on here to put us right. But does show that you shouldn't believe everything you read!

Hi have access to the Dennis works records which indicate that no F2 was delivered in 1956! However an F2 was delivered on the 20th February 1957, chassis no 4329, the engine no is B80 50c W4
Please note that all F2s were fitted with Rolls B80 engines, none were fitted with the smaller B60 .So accepting the information on the posting is incorrect about the engine, it could also be incorrect about the date too. From the info that I have I am 90% positive that above appliance is chassis no 4329

The B60 was a six cylinder 4.25 litre; the B80 was a straight 8, with the same bore and stroke, and a 5.65 litre capacity. The B60 developed 120 BHP and the B80 produced 160. These engines found their way into Austin military vehicles, Princess R saloon cars, some ambulances and a few Bedford fire engines, as well as being the standard offering in Dennis fire appliances until brigades started changing over to diesel.
