1973 Maxim 85ft MM Aerial

Boston Fire Dept. Fire Brigade Ladder Co. Housed on Long Island. Boston needed a smaller truck due to the firehouse limitations on the Island. They purchased this classic from another dept.

This looks a lot older than 1973. This chassis was introduced in the 1950s. I think the department may have bought it in 1973 after it had served elsewhere.

According to the book on the history of Maxim Fire Apparatus, this is a "1973" chassis. The large flat nose of the cowling is the key. Earlier models had narrower noses. In the '70s Maxim also started producing cab forward models. The conventional cab models continued with the broader nose.

Correction and apologies!
I did a bit more research and this configuration was produced by Maxim (albeit in tiny numbers) until 1979! Sometimes I am amazed at how conservative some US fire departments can be, because this was an expensive custom truck, which was essentially thirty years out of date when it was bought, if indeed it was in 1973.

Boston Fire purchased this Maxim in 2004 from the Whitman Mass. Fire Dept.

Boston's L-31 (fire brigade) Maxim is still on Long Island in Boston Harbor along with E-54's 2009 Ford/KME. The island is now cut of from the mainland due to the Long Island bridge being completely closed due to severe deterioration.

As a point of information, the last S-model produced by Maxim was in 1988.
