Top View of Truck 3, Portland, Oregon
I took this picture from my 9th floor flat on April 2, 2012. The tractor is from Spartan (from 1994, I think) and the 100-ft. ladder/trailer is from LTI. picture 11167 shows a normal view of a similar truck, with an American LaFrance tractor.
Portland has a population of about 600,000, and 31 fire stations. Each station has an engine (pumper); most are American LaFrance or Pierce.
There are 9 ladder trucks. Stations 3, 4, 7, 13, 22, and 25 have tillers, Stations 2 and 8 have mid-mount telescoping booms (see #11621 for Truck 8), and Station 2 has a normal rear-mount aerial.

For comparison, Portland has about the same population as Leeds, but its complement of 31 front-line engines and 9 ladders is about average for a US city of this size.
The variety of ladders is not all that typical. Among similar sized cities, Boston has only rear-mounts and San Francisco only tillers. FDNY runs more than 150 ladders in only three configurations and three sizes. (75', 95' towers and 100' ladders). They have around a dozen tillers, at selected stations in areas of the city where manuvering a "straight stick" would be too challenging!
