Kingston Upon Hull Fire Station

Hull central fire station, Worship Street, Hull. This was the old Headquarters of the Kingston Upon Hull fire brigade, passed to Humberside fire brigade with the change in local boundary moves in the 1970's. The control room used to be in the building closest to the camera. Not sure what appliances now run out of this station, there was only one Scania pump in the station when I took the photo which turned out just as I walked away.

Sadly the one Scania pump is it! The station was recently downgraded from it's 2 pump & RSU status to one pump.
The HQ was in the buildings to the rear of the drill yard and the control room was on the first floor of the nearest part of the building. There was also a portacabin on the roof which was a part of the control suite too (known as the Wendy House)

'WOW', what a lovely old station and thanks for sharing the picture with us Paul.
I bet there was a classic line-up of appliances here back in the 1940's, 50's and 60's.

They used to have the facility to make a 'green wave' clear route through all the town centre traffic lights. it involved the watch room attendant threading a length of thin wire along a series of pins sticking out of a large street map on the wall. Considering this was pre WW2 it was certainly 'high tech' in its time !

Wonderful Station. Kingston-upon-Hull is on of my favourite cities in the UK. AEC's once ruled the day in Kingston-Upon-Hull and it's sad to hear that there's only one pump here now. I can remember my first visit here in 1990 when they ran 2xpump, 1xTL and the Ford A CU.

Seems that the larger cities in the UK are evolving towards a fire station model which is more like that in most medium to large US cities.

Large multi-bay stations like this are being replaced by - often multiple - smaller single or two bay stations. These are intended to provide a more rapid response for the first due appliance, because of shorter travel distances. This tends to be effective because brigades usually manage to deal with more than 90% of calls with a single pump - provided it has adequate manning and is on scene promptly.

However, in countries like Germany, France and Spain this trend does not seem to be evolving as quickly, if at all. Part of the reason is a less stringent view of what constitutes a satisfactory first response time. This varies between 8 and 12 minutes in these countries, compared to around 4 to 6 in the UK and USA.

In addition, many urban fire stations are home to numerous special purpose trucks, pods and trailers - especially in Germany. These are usually partly or entirely jump manned by one or more pump crews, and therefore need to be housed along side them. Perhaps the most extreme example is Berlin's Tech I station, which houses no less than 54 vehicles, pods and trailers.

In addition, many stations in all of these countries house appliances for their associated volunteer fire company, which also requires one or more additional bays - so that seven bay stations like this are not uncommon even in small towns.
