Hi , the dates , for your interest , are : Pump 1924 TL 1928
Added by Bob Hornsby. on 01 November 2012.
The Morris Magirus turntable ladders were badged for John Morris & Co, the Magirus importer in to the UK, but they had no connection to Morris Motors. Darlington CB operated one, which was acquired in the late 1930s. The chassis and Meadows engine were virtually identical to the Dennid trucks of the same era.
I am 100% certain that the TL is a Dennis chassis. I have limited information that a chassis was supplied to John Morris for Johannesburg on the 3rd March 1928..... unfortunately no chassis number is shown on the record. I will dig some more.
Rob, the engine in the above machine is the 60HP (127 x 180mm Bore and Stroke) White and Poppe unit which was found in all the larger engined Dennis 'N' Types.
I believe the Darlington TL had a Meadows engine, and these were also installed in the wartime Home Office issued Dennis Merryweather TLs, which used a very similar chassis and bodywork. It was EHN 118, and supplied in the late 1930s.
Rob, I am the Preserved Fire Appliance Archivist for the Dennis Society and have lists and records going back to about 1912, That is why I often ask for more information when Dennis machines are featured on this site in order to identify their origins. At the present time I have about 470 Dennises in preservation, all information appreciated.
Is there any record of whether EHN 118 survived? I know it went to a local Darlington firm when it was replaced by the (thankfully preserved) Leyland Firemaster Magirus 999 MHN in 1960, but I have no idea if it survived.
I hope it did, because I don't think there were very many of these Morris Magirus ladders dating from this era.
Afraid not Rob.. There are only 3 Darlo machines surviving to my knowledge, the Firemaster, the Dennis Wrecker both in Dr Barry's care and one of the Land Rovers which Brett Clayton is restoring.
Barrie, the Dennis F60 ET FGR281S, which was stationed at Darlington most of it's life also survives happily alongside the Firemaster and the Dennis Maxim wrecker.
Oh yes of course......forgot about the old Pump Escape, was removed from Darlo shortly after the Durham 'take-over', spent a few years at Framwellgate Moor Training School and thereafter it was the 'exhibition' appliance attending shows and events with kids climbing all over it. It didnt get much use at Darlington either.
You have beaten me to it Paul, I was going to add the beautiflly restored last appliance purchased by the then County Borough of Darlington and only one to display it's original livery. Regards EHN 118 I was also told it was sold locally to Alan Blair Demolition Contractors and travelled to a job in Scotland, where until a few years back thought it had remained, but a conversation resulted in information that it returned south and was sold to a metal fabrication firm in Northallerton, were it was eventually was cut up!

I can remember the old Wheeled Escape that Darlington had. They brought it to my old junior school many many years ago. Would love to see a picture of it.
The other Darlington machines still on the DVLA Database (but all are likely scrapped) are:
DHN 999C Landrover last taxed 1990 (and green in colour) SHN 999F ERF HP Last Taxed 1996 UHN 999G Dennis F109 Last Taxed 1986
As for the WrE that came to your school Graham..
Brett.. Get the Landy finished and you too can have a proper Darlington CBFB liveried machine to match the CWS TrP!

The Dennis Maxim Wrecker at Darlington was known as a Dennis Maxim Holmes Recovery Vehicle. It had Holmes cranes fitted, I both trained on it and used it in anger. Darlington also had a Dennis ET which came from Durham. The Leyland Firemaster TL was one off only two the other was in Hong Kong. It was replaced by a Dennis Magirus TL in 1985, fitted with a 4 man cab, I was trained on both machines.
Mike: The only other Firemaster Magirus TL originally went to Wolverhampton, and was fitted with a front mounted 500 GPM pump, which made it a TLP. It replaced a wartime issue Merryweather on a half cab bus chassis, which is actually on this site.
If it went to Hong Kong they must have acquired it from Wolverhampton,
