Note the opening window at the bottom of the cab door. The radio handset was fitted inside and could be accessed from the outside. The idea was to be able to used the RT without getting in the cab.The engine noise when pumping was very high making radio conversation quite difficult. A very simple solution in my opinion!

This Auction yard situated near the little village of Maltby near Yarm used to be the main disposal centre for Municipal Vehicles in Cleveland, and up to the end of the 90's you could often find a good selection of former local authourity Buses Fire Appliances, and Military Vehicles.Unfortunately these days it only handles lease cars. Not much of interest turns up now. The staff were always friendly and would often let you go round and take pictures. They wouldnt release details of purchasers though.Did you manage to photograph other Fire Appliances here Paul? particularly any former Cleveland Fire Brigade?

Hi Chris

I only have a photograph of the old Darlington wrecker which was sold at the same auction as the ERF. The reason why I have this photograph is because I was at the auction and successfully bid and came home with the ERF via a trip to Mitchell Diesels to sort it's gearbox problems out, on a cold and very misty December morning in 1995

Same registration number - RHN 999 - ( minus the "L" ) as Darlington's Commer Carmichael Water Tender No:3, which had almost the same body and locker configuration as the York City and then later Rowntree factory Commer Carmichael water tender - which was the model used for the famous Dinky Supertoys fire engine.
