Can any of our Australian contributors tell me if SES Rescue are part of the fire service in Australia, or a separate organisation? I ask after watching a programme in which SES were requested even though the fire service were already in attendance.

Hi Matt, uncertain regards other States of Australia, but here in Western Australia the SES volunteers come under the control of The Department of Fire and Emergency Services.

"It plays a key role in countering the effects of natural and man-made emergencies, , " (I took that from their web page).

I believe they only perform vehicle rescue in remote areas where there is no existing Fire and Rescue Service. However they are active in cliff and cave rescue, and land search and civil defence roles. They work very close with the fire and police services.

Web site is: www.ses-wa.asn.au/
