Unknown to many, the state of Victoria has THREE public fire services: the MFB, the CFA and the DSE. That 'Department for Sustainability and Environment' is by law the fire authority for about one third of the area of Victoria: for the 'fire protected area's' (= mainly the State Forests and the National Parks). Depending on the fire risks, the DSE operates between 2, 000 and 2, 800 firefighters.
