a Morris Commercial pump ex Flint brigade took part in the war effort in Liverpool then found its way to Courtaulds Chemicals as a works appliance purchased by my uncle in 1972 left outside for 25yrs then dug out of the brambles for a full nut and bolt restoration in early 2005 due out summer 2007

Jason, do you just specialise in machines that have been left out side for 25 years? Your TL is another fine example....

Added by Barry on 01 February 2007.
Ha ha no it may seem like that though!!
I just go on little expeditions to find vehicles that i have heard about, this one is my uncles engine and his "little" project.
I think i am lucky to find these only two weeks before i found the TL a scrap man had come to take it away but had forgotten, so for it now to be in my garage having ££££'s spent on it is a small price to pay for the preservation of our fire fighting heritage

Added by Jason on 01 February 2007.
i guess barry if i had your money i would no longer feel the need to extract such piles of scrap from such places?
i do not live in some blinkered society that seems to believe that every vehicle preserved arrives in to preservation in ex works condition
i along with hundreds of other preservationists rescue fire engines from uncertain futures and give them the lease of life deserved
i will not tollerate the armchair preservationist nor the veiws of mantle peice restorationists
my TL is the sole survivor of her type from Surrey is that not reason enough to preserve it?
the next time somebody has the nerve to slate the work i do on our heritage can that person take into account the feelings of the person such comments are addressed?

Jason, very pleased to see this appliance has been preserved. It was new to the Holywell Rural District Council and delivered to them by Merryweather's on the 12th. March 1940. It operated from the fire station at Halkyn but later in National Fire Service (NFS) days it was moved to Holywell fire station. After sale by the County of Flint Fire Service it was indeed operated by Courtauld's Works Fire Brigade in one of their works in Flint. When sold by them it was acquired by Tom Hollis in Garden City.

A family memeber purchased this machine from Notty Ash Garage in 1972 and got it in to a prize winning machine and was rallied in the local area until around 1986 when unfortunately due to storage issues and working commitments its condition deteriorated to that of how you see it now in 2006 it was removed and taken to a workshop for a complete bare chassis re build.
Now the lions share is done and all pump parts reunited after being taken off for safe keeping.
A beautiful little appliance and will be rallied soon!

Jason, I see this appliance has now been issued with a road tax certificate and so will presumably soon appear at a rally or two. Could you advise me please of any that it is due to appear at this coming year?

it wont be long! finishing off now! i will keep you posted

Hi Jason my father Don Jones was the Fire Officer at coutaulds when this appliance was in use there, he was the Fire officer that was at the time when Tom Hollis acquired it, I have some photos of it and would love to see the appliance now it has been restored.

Well done Jason on a marvelous job restoring the old Morris. Another Flintshire machine preserved. It's a pitty that the likes of HDM 763/4 Commer QX/HCB WrT, 42 BDM Commer QX/Buttons, WDM488/9 Commer QX/Buttons, PDM 501 Dennis F25/Dennis, ODM 714 Dennis F25/Dennis CDM563C Commer VAC/HCB-Angus ET and NDM139E Commer VAC/HCB-Angus WrT BDM949J Bedford TK/HCB-Angus WrE and ODM446L Dennis F48/Dennis WrT wern't preserved too. Last saw CDM563C in a scrapyard on the Colomendy Road in Denbigh around 1980. BDM 308 Leyland FK4 Cub Hawarden UDC FB and GDM 507 Dennis F7/Dennis PE and SDM391M Dennis F48/Dennis/Simon TSM15 Simonitor appear to be the only Flintshire appliances preserved. A note about the Simonotor. It was purchased by Flint Town Council and not County of Flint Fire Service for use in the three Courtaulds factories at Deeside Mill, Aber Works and Castle Works.

Added by Andy Middleton on 10 November 2009.
Sorry Andy but I am told that GDM 507 was broken up in the last few years. I saw it back in 1995 in a Nottinghamshire scrapyard when it was in a restorable condition although the escape was beyond repair. It was sold, but for reasons unknown to me, it hasn't survived.

Added by Chris Wood on 10 November 2009.
GDM 507 a Dennis is still taxed until March 2010 which suggests it is still in existence.

Added by Dusty on 11 November 2009.
Thanks Chris and Dusty.

Added by Andy Middleton on 11 November 2009.
Dusty, I don't know why GDM 507 is still shown as taxed, after the scrapyard Chris mentions it was in a field alongsiode the A46 near Lincoln and I'm sure was reduced to just a chassis and front scuttle - just visible from the road - a friend called last year enquiring about it for parts availability and was informed it had been broken up - it is certainly no longer there !

Wondering from Overseas, here:

Could Dennis F-7, GDM 507, identity have been "transferred" to another machine for taxing purposes/ to save on costs of registering this other machine ?

Regards, from Canada,
Pat_R-B

Added by Pat Rivers-Bowerman on 13 November 2009.
Don't think so because DVLA stiil show it assigned to a Dennis - that was my first thought !

Added by Rick Loudon on 13 November 2009.
Yes that is certainly one possiblity Pat, in this case the registration will have passed to another Dennis vehicle although not necessarily a fire appliance. Do we know for certain that it was GDM 507 in the field near Lincoln, does anyone have a photo of it there?

Added by Dusty on 13 November 2009.
No photo of it there but it was definatly GDM 507 the Flint F7

Added by Rick Loudon on 13 November 2009.
So, while poor old GDM 507 is no longer with us; somebody has made off with its Official Identity, and, stuck it on another machine....legally, or, otherwise ???

Is that possible; and thusly raising false hopes for GDM 507 still being with us ??

Added by Pat Rivers-Bowerman on 13 November 2009.
A photograph of GDM 507 in the field was published in the Fire Service Preservation Group newsletter back in July 1998. At that time the body was intact but the ladder had broken over the cab.
On the question of the registration being transferred, this could only have been possible if GDM 507 was MOT'd which is at best, a remote possibility.

Does anyone know if either SDM 826 or SDM 827 Karrier 21A/Carmichael WrT's ex Prestatyn and Holywell are in preservation? Thanks folks.

Added by Andy Middleton on 14 November 2009.
I'm a bit late into this discussion but, in response to Andy Middleton, I rescued ex Flint Karrier Gamecock SDM 827 from a yard near Southampton many years ago. It was passed on to a new custodian via the late Alan Ernshaw (Nostalgia Road) but I've lost track of it. It was unrestored but in fairly good condition. Details of its present location would be appreciated.

Added by Simon Rowley on 26 August 2010.
Thanks Simon, I heard that you had 827 and to be honest I thought you still had her. Oh well you can't win them all.

Added by Andrew Middleton on 26 August 2010.
The Simonitor that is mentioned, that was stationed in Flint was not bought by Flint Town Council, but by County of Flint Fire Service and not to ptotect the Courtaulds Factories, The Commer Karrier that was bought by Courtaulds Where James Jones' dad was Chief Officer came from Prestatyn, the other Commer Karrier was in Flint, that was replaced by the Simonitor. Ken Hayton was responsible for the buying of that appliance, reg no of Flint appliance was SDM826, Prestatyn's Commer was SDM827

Added by Paul Cunningham on 15 February 2011.
Having spoken to former OIC's Pete Brokin and Geoff Ellis who have both assured me that Flint Town Council purchased the machine prior to Denbighshire & Montgomeryshire inspecting it.
