Definitely Merryweather. Nickname - the 'Kent Killer'.

OK Tony - now, you have a story to tell us about this pattern of ladder......

AKA the "gut-buster"; or, over here, Bangor ladder(with Tormentor poles).....?

Do tell !!

BTW - is it just me; or is that a "hoosegow" behind the Engine ? Y'know - Jail, Gaol, Crowbar Hotel, The Big House, The Pen, Sing-Sing, Correctional Institution, & etc.

Windows are rather tall & narrow - the bars continue above the first floor - no sign of industry....

Hi Pat,

This ladder was designed to replace the 50 foot wheeled escapes and Kent Fire Brigade was the first to use them. Not sure that anyone was actually killed using them, but because they were so heavy (nearly twice the weight of modern 45 ft ladders), and had less effective tormentor poles, crews found them very hard work. Feeling "like death" after using them and blaming Kent for their introduction was probably the reason for the nickname "Kent killer" I was actually part of a crew that lost one on a drill. Fortunately everyone managed to get out of the way, but the ladder needed major surgery. I also remember, after one difficult pitch, it took six of us to get it back in to the vertical position. Don't know about the location, but as it is a dock area I suspect the building is, or was, a bonded warehouse.

Yes Tony,a bonded warehouse in Bristol city docks.
It was demolished (blown up)some years ago.

This baby Bedford was used at Brixham Devon. I used to go to rallys in it as a kid.
