Bedford TK HCB Firefly Snorkel 50' PHP

taken 1984 at the fire exhibiton Birmingham NEC. Sorry about the quality but this is the unique ex Kidderminster appliance, Worcester City and Couty Brigade. Not quite a HP and not quite a PHP. See picture 14672 for the references. By 1984 it was used at NEC itself, for maintenance I think not firefighting.

This appliance was actually classed as a PHP.Its a 1964(reg-164 YFK)Bedford TKEL/Angus Fire Armour/DS50(50ft)Simon Hydraulic Platform with Angus'Fire Fly'bodywork. It went on to serve at the Kidderminster station of the Worcester City & CFB from 1964 and served for 16 years until going out of service and sold to the newly opened National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham in 1982.
This was actually the very first 50ft PHP(Pump Hydraulic Platform)to go into service with a UK Fire Service.

I rode this PHP a couple of times when I first joined at Kidderminster in the late 70's prior to the arrival of Dennis-Simon SS263 RUY 150V. Although it didn't have the full WrT style bodywork, it was indeed used as a front line pumping appliance in it's early years being equipped with a fully functioning pump and hosereels. In fact I remember getting it to work from open water from time to time as part of the pump's standard test.
By the end of it's service, 164 YFK was classed as a special and was only used when called for. However, as a result of the imminent arrival of the new Dennis, several of the stations PDA's were amended to include the HP. These amendments took effect before the new HP was put on the run and resulted in the old PHP going out in a blaze of glory with a few unexpected shouts. This must have been quite a shock to her system and when she turned out to an AFA at the local hospital, she broke down before getting there, despite the hospital only being about 1/4 mile up the road from the fire station. This may well have been her very last shout.
