Clwyd's Bedford J HCB-A ET/CU LUN 221F
An ex Denbighsire appliance acting as control for the Cynwyd mountain fire this is Wrexham's ET in 1976. The crews called it the breadvan because of the shape and the rather indifferent performance. The red and white chequered flag is a nice old fashioned way of designating control units. The front was painted DayGlo, a paint from the Dane Group of companies in Stratford London E15, used quite a lot in the era before appliance striping. see also #20445, another DayGlo.

Was the radiator open, like that; or was there a grille that fitted in behind the winch ?

Pat, it had a "standard" style Bedford/HCB grille,which I presume had been removed to top up Oil/Water on scene.

And probably to assist cooling the engine. The appliance was being used as the Control at this incident and the engine had to be run occasionally to re-charge the batteries. 1976 was exceptionally hot in the U.K. and any means of cooling the engine while it was running was resorted to.

Incidentally; a technique still resorted to, over here; for our more elderly Pumpers on-Scene, on a hot summer's day; opening the hood (bonnet) to assist engine cooling....
Geez, Petros, pedalling all that distance, for these photos, on such a scorcher of a day; hope, the fire-crew would have cooled you down with a line, if needed !

Cynwyd was famous for using a Komatsu bulldozer fitted with a 13ft angled blade to cut roads and fire breaks across the mountain.
The building behind the ET in this photowas a public toilets and provided us with water and electricity. Our caterers installed 2 large fridges in the ladies toilet to store food ! The ET stayed parked in that spot as Main Control for 7 weeks.
