The ERF cab design looks so much more modern than the Dennis, despite the appliance being a year older. I believe this Dennis cab was introduced in 1964/5 and of course the ERF first appeared at the Commercial Motor Show on the Newcastle and Gateshead dual purpose prototype in 1967.
The lower cab and larger windscreen were made possible by the stepped-down side frame members. This feature also made the chassis ideal for Snorkels and TL applications.
The 50 foot Snorkel was only very briefly popular in the UK, and never caught on in any European country. But these small Snorkels and "squirts" did see quite widespread use here in the US, and Chicago - where I live now - continues to operate a few 55 foot Snorkels, which are very busy at working fires all over the city and are being replaced this year.
