ex Rescue Tender Leyland Comet
This Leyland Comet was new to the National Coal Board Mines Rescue Service and was one of five in service in the North East coalfields area. New in 1954 with bodywork by Wilson & Stockall of Bury, Lancs and carried a crew of 6. As well as the usual Proto BA sets the unit also carried Brown-Mills Aerophor Liquid Oxygen BA
Firefighting equipment was stored in external lockers as the MRS attended fires in the residential areas of the collieries.
Restored and owned by a gentleman from Lancashire and seen at Malpas Cheshire 13.09.2009

The National Coal Board obviously wasn't into bright colours - although this colour would make sense, in not showing up the all-pervasive black coal-dust of the coal-mine pitheads....

Great picture of a very unusual beast. Did these have a pump, tank, hoses, ladders etc or did they just respond to residential fires to back up the local fire brigade?

The NCB north east area stopped fighting municipal fires in Durham and Northumberland in 1958. They attended town fires on an agency agreement with Durham County Fire Brigade and Northumberland County Fire Brigade. The refusal of the brigadesmen to attend surface fires forced the county fire authorities to establish new fire stations in the requisite areas at Ashington, Crook and Fencehouses. The colours of the Leyland Comets when in service were cream with red mud guards. They were not dark blue when in service. They were not fire engines and did not respond to residential fires as back up. This arrangement stopped as above and the Leyland pumps were sold.
