Devon Dennis Line Up June 2009
This picture was taken at the Fire Engine Rally at Escot Park,Devon on Sunday 28th June 2009.
It shows the rear of four Ex Devon County Fire Service Dennis F8's. From the right;
OUO547 Delivered to Devon in 1953 and issued in June 1953 to Kingsbridge. Moved to Totnes in 1960 and to Hartland in 1968. out of service in 1977.
LCO318 Purchased in 1955 by Plymouth City Fire Brigade for Torr Fire Station. When Torr was closed it was on the run at the new Crownhill Station. Served in Plymouth for all its life laterly used for training and driver training.
PUO928 Originally stationed at Cullompton station, but after six months it was returned to workshops and fitted with a Merryweather "Gut buster" 45'ladder and then allocated to Seaton until it was withdrawn from service.
STT318 Stationed at Dartmouth.

The F8 could be supplied with either a 200 or 300 IG tank - the bigger one was longer, and reduced locker capacity somewhat. Neither qualified the F8 as a JCDD-specification Water Tender, as this required at least a 400 IG tank. The F8 chassis' GVW was too low to permit a tank over about 350 IG, and because it was narrow and short space was also at a premium.
The single rear hose reel was standard, and the dual reels were optional, although a lot of brigades ordered them.
When I was at Cambridge and lived next door to the fire station on Parker's Piece, they had an F8 with a 45 foot ladder - very useful in medieval college buildings with narrow entrances, low archways and wierd roof angles, where the 35 foot extension was too short and the 50 foot escape too unwieldly!

Rob was this Dennis F8 KCE 820 which is on this site, the strange prototype with the covered wheel arches? I also lived on Parkside in college rooms next to that wonderful fire station line up in 1975/6.

It seems no 2 F8s are alike. I have seen oblong tanks, round for and aft tanks and round abeam tanks. This is not to mention the multitudinous locker arrangements.

As I recall (from 1964!) the Cambridge F8 had open wheel arches, a single rear hose reel and a small tank - but I'm afraid I have no idea about the registration number.

The Cambridge F8 was KCE 820 and it did have wheel arch covers very similar to the Dennis light four with 'New World' bodywork - they were removable so both options would be possible - it is now with the national museum store in Weedon Northamptonshire .
