Dennis F8 PUO928 Rear shot
Rear shot of Devon Dennis F8 PUO928 taken at the Fire Engine Rally at Escot Park,Devon on 28th June 2009. Originally stationed at Cullompton but after six months it was taken into workshops and fitted with a Merryweather "Gut buster" 45'ladder. It was then allocated to Seaton until withdrawl.

I agree Robert, but when you consider the chassis size its a design classic. The amount of gear and its stowage is incredible. The hard suction fitted the light pump as well I believe, also the F8 had two hosereels where a lot of machines were only carrying one at the time. On a cosmetic front, and I am being picky, it would be nice if she was carrying a 35 footer, wood of course!

John I agree a wooden ladder would look well, yes the suction hose was all London round thread and was universal to all appliances.

I believe certainly on the Devon F8's that were there on the day that this was the usual place for the LPP to be stowed. I'm not an expert on the LPP but I believe it was a coventry climax but in a smaller frame.

That would make sense Paul, thanks. The only Climaxs I worked with had the eye and deliveries at the end of the frame and this looks like a side delivery. Perhaps an LPP expert can enlighten us.

It is a LPP Coventry Climax 250-350gpm pump, light it was not took 4 men to carry it!!!!! across fields, but if lucky and you could use wheels and 1 man to push down road.

"Featherweight" is a Coventry Climax FWMP. 250 Gallons per minute rather than the larger 350 GPM version.

I have seen a photo of puo928 when new at cullompton before it was converted it was towing a dennis major trailer pump. xta304 an all silver side valve dodge replaced the f8 and remained in service until 1974. Then replaced by dennis d ota999m..

Both Oxford and Cambridge ran pumps with Merryweather 45 foot ladders, because some of the medieval college buildings were only accessible by doorways which were too narrow for a wheeled escape.
Cambridge had an F8, which I believe may have been the first one, although I have never been able to confirm this.
There were various options on the F8. The tank was either 200, 300 or 350 gallons, there were different locker layouts offered, and the hose reel could be a single located above the pump or a single or dual reels above the side lockers.
