Two ERF ALPs at Durham Fire HQ

Seeing Double !!!!!
Unique photo of two ALP's side by side at Durham HQ The machine on the left, OPT 515J was supplied new to DFB in 1970 whilst the one on the right, SHN 999F originated with Darlington FB in 1967 Darlinton was amalgamated with Durham in 1974 Both vehicles of course long gone although I understand that SHN 999F survived as a high rise maintainance vehicle in the London area for a few years.

Yes Phil I knew him well......you are correct of course..HPs they were in my time.....trouble is they keep changing terminology constantly, hard to keep up sometimes.

I have used the one on the right it belonged to Darlington Fire Brigade. It was bought for fires at Bank Top Railway Station and the DMH. I trained on the machine and have driven it and used it in anger

Although these look identical, SHN999F had a unique Cummings engine - a nod to the fact that the Cummings Diesel engine factory was located in Darlington. The other ERF had the Perkins V8, which was the standard engine.

This was my first comment on this site. For the uninitiated, DMH was the Darlington Memorial Hospital. Neither the railway station nor the hospital were all that unusual, when it came to architecture or design, so I never really understood why the town bought this Snorkel, as they already had a Leyland Firemaster Magirus 30 meter ladder which was only seven years old.

The Firemaster, one of only two with a turntable ladder, is mercifully preserved by Dr. Barry Hutchinson, and is illustrated on this site. It was acquired in July 1960 and was one of the earliest fire appliances to be fitted from new with rotating blue lights.
