Barrie, this is the Land Rover I was asking you about when we were in Edinburgh a couple of weeks ago. As I mentioned I'm in touch with the new owner and he would like any info you may have about it's past. If you could send to my private email, I have tried to contact you via your brigade email.

I served at Runcorn Fire Station from 1975 for 27 years and drove this appliance many times.

I am interested to know how it handled, and if in particular that monster pusher-bumper made the steering heavy. Although from the photo, it actually looks a bit as if the rear axle is what is overloaded.

A lot of fire brigades used modified Land Rovers, and unfortunately some of the changes that were made often created problems, affecting acceleration, braking, handling, steering and off-road capabilities...

As far as am aware the front bumper was a water tank and apparently it rolled badly.

Does any one know who carried out the Body conversion?

Ed: my first thought is Spenklin Branbridge as the bodymaker based on the discussion on this picture - they certainly built a number of similar appliances for shopping centres like Wolverhampton's Mander centre:
