This is at the old Grangetown Fire Station. In common with many of the ex North Riding machines, this vehicle didn't receive any white areas to it's livery. The building is (as far as I know) still there with a Tyre company under the name 'Tyre Station' A super picture Ian, I'm looking forward to seeing others from your collection.
Thankyou again Ian, a lovely piece of North Yorkshire history! Chris ( tongue in cheek!) how could anybody want to ruin this with white markings? Its pure fire appliance through and through!
I tried to buy this machine for 6d when i was 3/4 years old so I'm told, they use to have jumble sales to raise money for the ben fund, i think this is when i fell in love with fire engines. ian mc
Teesside/Cleveland had many of these machines running as Pumps, Pump Ladders And Pump Escapes, Thornaby station pre move to Master Road had 2 bedfords on the run Pump and Pump Escape..
Hi Mr Todd, Got my Cleveland Scania thanks, its superb! Must get the Newcastle AEC Regent next. The two Thornaby Bedfords you refer to appear in a photograph published by the 'Remember Thornaby Group' it may be worthwhile tracking it down. A google enquiry will bring up details of the group. The identities of the two appliances appear to be 499APY (WrT) and AVN925B (WrE) The station was on George Street.
Grangetown was the 'jankers' station in TFB days....you got posted there if you upset someone with a white had !!!! There was a fantastic pole drop protected only by a huge pair of spring operated trap doors opened by brass pedal .....bit like a hangman's gallows trap but in reverse !!!!
hello barrie and chris.. 1st of all re upsetting stn o.. it was billingham or marine after you left.. I've got a photo of TDC620M parked next to george street after the move to master road.. ps barrie my email address you had for me changed from the ntl one try my hotmail one.. have a good xmas both of you.. plus Mr Green Keep it real and keep doing your community fire safety stuff down there.. from all of us in GOD'S country
Hi Dave, I'm now pleased to report that I am now the proud owner of the Oxford AEC Regent in Newcastle livery! I bought it from Octo Models in Hull and had to put up with her ladyship berating it as a toy lol!
Hi Neal Oxford are also bringing out the K2 in AFS Green, also the HU in red (London) and the trailor pumps (red, green and grey)So with the grey TTL and Taxi you could have the whole fleet.
Redcar had one of these on the run as a PE when I started in Jan'75, as the sprog on the shift I was the hydrant man in the middle of the rear seat until I qualified as a BA wearer.
I remember the registration letters were CPY, but what was the number of Redcar's machine, and does it still exist?
Hi Mike Redcars pe was CPY 9 , CPY 8 was some were in North York’s and CPY 7 was at Grangetown they no longer exist I think they were turned into recovery trucks for BirkBrow garage.
Hi Ian, thanks for your information. I remember that this machine went at the same speed with or without the escape.
When I was new at Redcar we did turnout drills from the appliance room - right out of the station and down to the lights, turn left over the railway bridge and then round the roundabout at the end of Coatham Road and back to the station, straight into the drill yard and then get a line to work from the head of the escape into the tower.
As the machine required full choke to start, it sort of kangaroo hopped down the Trunk Road, whist making some awful noises. It was bad enough sitting in the back, I dread to think what joe public thought.
The building is (as far as I know) still there with a Tyre company under the name 'Tyre Station' A super picture Ian, I'm looking forward to seeing others from your collection.
