Bedford Water Ladder North Yorkshire Fire Brigade

John Johnson you mentioned this appliance in an earlier post. DPY 592V Bedford TK Water ladder photo taken outside York fire station. These were purchased for York because of the very narrow Streets in the City centre and were a compact but fully equiped vehicle. How things have changed we now run full size Volvo Water Ladders in the City. Equipment stowage and kit carried has changed too, the kit in the front locker is for rescue the 2 bottom boxes carry the "Black hawk" hand operated hydraulic rams and spreaders no cutter carried just the "Senger Saw" an air operated hacksaw type device, the twin cylinders in its cradle on the top shelf of the front locker provided the power. Not such a good idea getting equipment for a road accident off into the roadway with traffic passing and only looking at the crash and not the road ahead, sorted by the Health and safety people as RTA kit now carried on the Nearside of the appliance. On view in the centre locker is the 70mm canvas delivery hose which had to be scrubbed clean and hung up the tower to dry before going back on the run, unlike to day hose it off and shove it away still wet. When this appliance attended road traffic accidents it would also be accompanied by an ET which had a bit more heavier gear on board. The Rescue Pumps we run now in the County in my opinion from releasing casualties are much better due to the kit carried, also 2 rescue pump are mobilised the an RTA so you have more crew to get on with the job and gives the casualty a greater chance within the 'Golden Hour'not having to wait for heavier rescue kit to arrive on the ET. We still 2 Heavy Rescue Units (ET) but are only turned out the incidents involing heavy goods vehicles, train and aircraft jobs. Paul.

Many thanks for this Paul, in my humble opinion the best machine ever made. They served so many brigades well and were one of the best ever produced, a true classic.

Thanks for th info Paul, these are and will always be the best machines the brigade will ever have, what was the top speed on these compared to the Volvo appliance ? it's good to know a man in the brigade likes the rp's i was very sceptical of them at 1st, but i know you don't mince your words so nice to see the brigade moving forward, not back.

I guess my main concern is with on ly the 2 Heavy rescue Units on the run in such a large area attendance time must suffer and what if one goes off the run, can the gear from it be stowed on a pump / Rp ?

God how i miss the old Bedford pumps like this !
