What is te purpose of this appliance?

The machine based there was/is a normal pump and was alternately crewed with the fireboat.
The pump turns out to the town centre calls as the station is situated relatively close to centre and on the opposite side from South Road main station so can often get through when the traffic is bad. The fireboat was scrapped several years ago.

For some reason, Cleveland just had to psint the front panel of their fire appliances white, and they were the only UK brigade to do so, when everyone else understood that fire engine = red.

Not only that, but they then decided to let the manufacturer write his name on it in red. Dennis in mirror writing spells "sinned", which makes the vehicle appear to be more likely a mobile chapel than a fire engine. At least some brigades changed ERF lettering to read "FIRE"!

There was a fire station previous to this which was situated further back towards the river. It was no more than a garage. The station building consisted of ground floor with a watch room and general area with sleeping quarters upstairs.

The fireboat Cleveland Endeavour (aka "Sarah D") is listed as still in service since 2014 as a tug with John Dean, Hull - see tynetugs.co.uk/clevelandendeavour1978.html

It was a busy vessel on the Tees until recently working as a rubbish collection boat for Svitzer as the Sarah D.

This simple station was replaced by a brand new modern station which only operated for a few years before being closed.

The newer (1992) fireboat Cleveland Innovation is still on the Tees too as a support vessel at the Tees Barrage (still painted in the red/yellow fireboat livery it received for its appearance in an episode of ITV firefighting drama Steel River Blues, rather than the silver/orange it wore when it actually was a fireboat!)
