Tyne Tunnel fire appliance Land Rover E4
The Tyne Tunnel is situated on the A19 Road, and is one of the primary routes in North East England. The yellow Landrovers were licenced and equipped as Fire Appliances which is why they were allowed to have blue lights. The yellow livery was the Tyne and Wear PTE's house colours, and can trace it's origins back to the 1930's via the PTE's Buses. The Landrover's primary duties was to provide Escort and Emergency duties to the Traffic using the Tunnel.On the vehicle's rear, is a large sign which reads 'Follow Me' which illuminates when the convoy system is in use. I liked these vehicles, and wanted to exhibit one at the Preston Park Rally, however the management were not very sympathetic towards that idea, so it never came to pass. I understand that they all passed through a Landrover dealer in Wingate Co Durham after withdrawal, and SNL685Y turned up at an outdoor centre in Scotland, where it was seen by a Tunnel Employee on holiday there! I don't know the current locations of any other survivors.
The E416EVK is a Carmichael bodied Landrover Defender new in 1986. The Yellow Landrovers were replaced by white Discovery's from 1994, and EVK was the last survivor still in service and becoming T5 during 1996.
