1914 Dennis N-Type Braidwood Body Fire Engine.

Delivered in May 1914,this vehicle was Coventry's first motor fire appliance, and served that city for some twenty-two years before being sold to a local G.E.C.works,at which time it was converted from solid to pneumatic tyres. After a second career in industrial service, which included support of the City Brigade during the Coventry Blitz,it was pensioned off in1958,and acquired by Dennis Bros, for £35,returning to the Guildford factory where it was built. The engine is a side valve petrol unit by White and Poppe of Coventry, and developes 75bhp at 1170rpm,driving through a four speed crash gearbox to a Dennis patent worm final drive.Fuel consumption is 41/2 mpg.The Gwynne pump still operates at its original capicity. The windscreen and electric lighting are original, although the side lights were removed from the front dash and replaced by contemporary wing mounted lamps at the time of the pneumatic conversion in 1936.This 1914 Dennis'N'Type fire engine was photographed at the Amberley Working Museum Fire Show in West Sussex in 2004 and entered by The Dennis 1914 Association,Fleet,Hampshire.
