The registration of this rescue tender once used by the East Sussex Fire Brigade at Hastings was E331 DJK.I just found this out by having another old negative recopied, and so a better photo will be sent to site in due course.
Hi ESFB had 4 of these Jeeps at Brighton, Hastings, Uckfield and Battle.Lewes ran one in the yearly 90s as a heavy rescue unit before the arival of the Volvo in 1994.
I think B331 OJK was either written off in an accident or, was used as spares for the other 3 Jeeps in East Sussex as for a short while in 1999/2000 I owned and rallied A778 EPN the J20 based at Uckfield, its workshop records show it had a replacement rear axle from B331 OJK fitted on 23.11.90 (B331 OJK is listed as scrap on A778's equipment record) A778 EPN itself had major accident repairs from October 1987 - February 1988 -steering/gearbox and radiator . When new A778 EPN cost £18750 for the chassis and £12675 for the Angloco body plus the winch/compressor etc and £100 delivery! This was a fantastic vehicle to drive and had a 5.3 litre V8 petrol engine but returned 14mpg on unleaded petrol ! I regretted selling it but had to clear space for the arrival of my 1934 Dennis Big Six from York.
Forgot to say I sold A778 EPN in 2000 to Queens Motors of Purley in South London as an airbag recovery unit for use primarily on the southern section of the M25 if you go to their website there is a picture of it in a white livery I understand it is now out of use ! anyone fancy making a phone call ??
Thanks for the picture Pete, Rick is there any truth in the rumour, that came to me via an Angloco employee, that these were nicknamed "wallowing pigs"? That company turned out some very strange machines in the late seventies and early eighties. As I learned to my expense!
I can't comment on that rumour, having never driven one fully laden to a 'shout' having said that, the design style and body/equipment layout would lead me to think they were a pig to drive under 'efads' but, I still really regret selling it - to have so much power under the bonnet that you could actually sit at traffic lights, 'blip' the accelerator and flex the chassis had to be seen to be believed !!
