Old and New Glastonbury 1978
This picture was taken by Lester Solway and is reproduced with his full permission. It was taken in 1978 and shows the new Dodge/HCB Angus K1113 Water tender alongside the 1961 Dennis F28 Water Tender Ladder (formerly pump escape) 353MYA which had served the station faithfully from new but was soon to replaced by another Dodge. For a few months these machines ran alongside each other and I'm told it was something to behold hearing the distinct sound of the Dodge Perkins turning out first followed by the roar of the Rolls B61 petrol. If you look behind the Dennis you can just make out the outline of the rear of the Land rover which lived in its own little garage at the back of the station. One day in the late seventies the victorian fire station was condemned as being structurally unsafe and in risk of falling down. The same day, the appliances and land rover were moved to a council yard which would be the temporary station for a couple of years and I'm told the firemen for a period had to carry their fire kit around in the boot of their cars. The sign above the doors was saved and until recently was proudly hung above the doors on the new fire station that was until Somerset merged with Devon and every trace of the old Somerset Fire Brigade was removed to make for the new livery of Devon and Somerset, hurray!!!
