Austin Gypsy

A recent buy for the owner is this very nice looking Gypsy, seen at Astle Park in Cheshire.

Great to see it out. It has been garaged in Frodsham fire station for the last few years and has hardly seen daylight!

The Gypsy packed a lot of firefighting capability into an unusually small vehicle, but never came close to equaling Land Rover when it came to penetrating fire services.

Available in two choices of wheelbase, these had a front mounted 500 gpm Coventry Climax pump, a 50 or optionally 70 gallon tank, hose reel, accommodation for eight to twelve lengths of hose, small gear, a short extension ladder, searchlight, suctions and a crew of four. They did not have space for BA or foam making equipment.

A few were sold to county brigades, but most went to factory and industrial fire services.
