1980 NTFRS ERF-Metz

A 'tropical cab' ERF-Metz supplied to the Northern Territory Fire Service in Darwin Australia circa 1980. This appliance was ordered for supply in yellow, but was painted red during the 1980s. The 110 foot turntable ladder rendered the Dennis wheeled escapes obsolete. This photo was taken in 1998 shortly before being taken out of service.

Lou, this Erf/Metz TL was delivered to Darwin in the Northern Territory in 1970
(not 1980)and was origanally delivered in yellow livery. Also from information I was sent from the NTFS back in the early 1990's, it states the ladder(5 sections)was actually 37mtr in height????, (BE INTOUCH SHORTLY)Pete.

Hi Pete - the date of 1980 was a 'stab in the dark'. I thought it was around 1977-78 that the NT fleet became yellow, with appliances after that date being supplied yellow, and before that date undergoing re-painting. The 1972 F45 was suplied in red, not too sure about the 1975 F49 - I'll check tonight if I remember. Regards - Lou

Hi Pete - I checked the 1975 F49 tonight, and under the yellow paint is the original red. I also checked the old Annual Reports, and found that in 1978/79 it is stated that during this period the Brigade painted its appliances yellow due to better visibility especially at night. The ERF-Metz was not mentioned in any Annual Report up to 1973, but was listed in the report for 1976. The 1974 and 1975 Annual Reports don't exist, as Darwin was at that time suffering from the after-effects of Cyclone Tracy, and was in 'survivor mode', with many old records and photos simply blown into oblivion. I guess this means that the ERF was suplied some time in the period 1974-1976. Old photos show that the ERF was definitely supplied in red, and was repainted in the 1978/79 period, to be repainted red once more post 1982. Cheers - Lou
