This model of commercial Mack MC truck chassis was quite widespread, and many departments bought them after Mack discontinued their very famous custom CF chassis. It appeared in four-door, two-door canopy and standard two-door configurations, with single or tandem axles, and was used as a basis for aerials, rescues, tankers and specials as well as pumpers.
Probably the most iconic MC units were the famous FDNY Satellite Tenders, which served with the original Super Pumper tractor-trailer combinations. Other FDNY MCs included Rescues, Foam Pumpers and Hi-Rise Units. I believe some of these are still on the FDNY fleet.
I do not know if the chassis was originally designed specifically for garbage truck use, but a lot of them were used as garbage trucks, in part I think because of the low profile cab.
This cab was a bit tight, but otherwise the MC was a well-received product and had relatively compact dimensions - which added to its popularity in some communituies.
