Windsor Castle 1966 Landrover '11A 109'
This 1966 Landrover'Series 11A 109'fire tender(reg-KYK 220D)was supplied new to the Ministry of Works in 1966.They then made conversion of it to a fire engine using parts from an earlier Landrover owned by the Crown Estates.It then served at Windsor Castle from 1966 until 1981 before going out of service.
The Landrover was purchased in 2005 with just 11,000 miles on the clock having been left standing for some twenty years,all the red paint had faded, and it was in a terrible condition.Its now though nearly finished having had a complete overhaul and respray and didn't she look the part when appearing for the first time at the Amberley Fire Show in July,2008.
The present owner is looking for photo's of the fire appliance when in service,and also any information on the vehicle.If anyone can help with information,can they add their comments to my photo please.Thankyou.

Aha, so that's where the bits went from my NLR936. It seems that it was the "earlier" tender owned by Crown Estates.

Are either this or NLR936 still around today? KYK 220D is the same vintage as my own FMW703D ('66 Wiltshire Fire Brigade).

KYK220D is now in Germany! It's for sale atm, although once again is looking very sorry for itself.

Old Land Rovers do get around, just as they did in the days before other manufacturers like Mercedes, Tata and Toyota - among many others - started building alternatives. In the sixties there was hardly any country in the world where you could not find a few of them being used by the military, police, fire service or just in civilian everyday use. Although brilliant off road, they did suffer from some quite serious reliability problems, and in many places the service infrastructure was lacking - so they developed a reputation which quickly opened up big opportunities for competition from other manufacturers.
