Impressive size but why is the front of the body shaped in such an unusual way?

This type of ladder has a lower building height than normal types of ladders. And an engine is neccessary to drive it, so if you can't get lower you built it in the front ;-)

has this appliance recently been purchased by east sussex fire and rescue?
i saw the same registration in the sun a few weeks back carrying the name east sussex.

Yes this appliance is still on the run out of Maidstone (S60) i believe it holds the call sige 607

Its call sign was 605 and it changed to 60a1

The original design was specially engineered as a low profile ladder for the Bavarian city of Munich - but many were eventually supplied to other German fire services and several were also exported, including a handful to the UK.

This is one of the first generation, and there have been two somewhat less oddball designs since.

The IVECO chassis is a bit less popular these days, not east because the Mercedes Econic is a good alternative.

Is this the one that I keep seeing in a transport company's yard by the Ely to Norwich railway at Attleborough or is it another example of this design?

I believe this was shipped abroad somewhere as it was the 1st one to come out of service. The other 2 are in Norfolk with a lighting mast company and was disposed off about 2 years ago.
